No fewer than 200 suspects involved in a fracas
between the Abagana community in Njikoka Local Government Area and Ukpo, in
Dunukofia Local Council Area of Anambra State were arrested on Monday by the
Anambra Police Command.
The suspects allegedly burnt two police vehicles
and destroyed five buildings in the area.
It was gathered that the suspects attacked a
Divisional Police Officer in Ukpo and three other policemen.
A police guard on duty at the arena, Emmanuel Okafor, was killed.
Briefing newsmen on Monday while parading the
suspects, the state Police commissioner, Mr. Sam Okaula, said those involved in
the dastardly act would not go unpunished.
He said the suspects invaded the police station
with dangerous weapons and descended on the police post while also
engaging on heavy firing.
It was gathered that the problem was over land
disputes between Ukpo and Abagana communities.
The CP said, “It could be seen from the magnitude
of this unwarranted attack that the perpetrators obviously embarked on what
appears to be like an act of terrorism.”
